Made famous by the novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, this historic house in the heart of Savannah has a few ghostly rumors attached.

Although General Hugh Mercer began construction prior to the Civil War, he never inhabited the structure. He sold the unfinished building after the war. A hundred years of inhabitation caused severe deterioration and an antiques dealer named Jim Williams restored the home in the 1970s. It was in this house where he allegedly gunned down hustler Danny Hansford on May 2, 1981. Williams was acquitted of the crime and died of heart failure on January 14, 1990.

Some Savannahians have speculated that Williams' death was brought on by the vengeful spirit of Hansford. While Danny's ghost may not inhabit the house, Jim Williams may linger in the mansion. Some visitors have reported hearing the sounds of a party coming from the house, usually on the anniversary of Jim's final Christmas party.
