Popobawa - The Bat Demon of Zanzibar
I thought I'd share a little interesting tale from Africa...
Supposedly, there is a half-human, half-bat creature lurking in Zanzibar, preying on men in villages throughout the country. It's name is Popobawa. Described as a flying, one-eyed, demonic creature, it strikes (mostly) males in their beds, holding them down (or parayzing them, depending on the account) and forcefully raping them. After alleged attacks, many men will seep on their porch to avoid being caught in bed by the creature. Some believe it to be an evil spirit, though others would label it a cryptid.
Interesting stuff, even if it's not verifiable. It's a relatively new creature, only having appeared in stories since the 1970s. Yet it has caused widespread panic in parts of Africa.
